Inspiring Every Kid and Every Community’s passion for hockey.

Free Hockey opens doors for homeschoolers

With the help of Hockey Alberta’s Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) grant, the Blackfalds Homeschooler Hockey program introduced over 100 participants, boys and girls from 2-18 as well as their parents and guardians, to the game of hockey—many for the very first time.

Offered twice a month, this free, inclusive program was designed to eliminate financial and time-based barriers, giving homeschooled children and their families a chance to experience the joy of hockey in a welcoming environment.

“Engaging with the homeschool community through free hockey has given the kids team experience, physical activity, and a love of the sport,” said Breanne Vanwart, the Blackfalds Homeschooler Hockey program’s organizer.

Open to all ages and skill levels, families were invited to join their children on the ice—not only to support them but also to develop their own confidence and skills, potentially sparking an interest in coaching.

“By providing the free homeschool hockey to our community, we see families bring kids of all skill levels—learning to skate, playing hockey, and even coaching their friends,” Vanwart added. “Many of these families have multiple children who might not otherwise be able to participate in organized hockey due to cost or time commitments. By offering an all-ages, skill-inclusive program, we’re able to bring everyone together on the ice.”

Parents shared just how meaningful the program has been for their families.

“The boys are learning so much from the coaches, and they love the opportunity to play hockey with other kids from the homeschool community,” said Vanessa, a parent from the program.

“The hockey program has been a blessing to our family,” said Melissa, another participating parent. “We are a large family living on one income, and this program gave our kids the chance to play a sport they love. They’ve made friendships and developed skills that will have a lasting impact.”

This program perfectly illustrates the mission of the Every Kid Every Community initiative—to ensure every child, regardless of background or circumstances, has the opportunity to get involved in the game.
