Larry Reid’s influence on hockey in Alberta is profound. Known for his dedication and coaching excellence, he made substantial contributions not only as a player and coach for the Innisfail Eagles but also as a pioneer in the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP) in Alberta, training and educating hundreds of coaches throughout Alberta for over 15 years.
In 1984, Larry was given the opportunity to take his coaching skills to Harbin, China where he spent two months coaching China’s two junior national teams. Recognized in 2007, by Hockey Alberta as one of the top 100 contributors to hockey in the province.
His legacy lives on in the young athletes and coaches he inspired, embodying his philosophy that hockey is more than a game—it’s a way to build character and community. Larry truly believed in the benefits of organized sports in developing the community’s youth into young adults.
The players of the 1962-63 Innisfail Pontiacs midget hockey team coached by Larry established the Larry Reid Distinguished Leaders’ Scholarship.
Each year the Larry Reid Distinguished Leaders’ Scholarship is awarded to one individual pursuing their interests in hockey and community by attending the Future Leaders Program and completing and excelling in all the requirements, demonstrating a high level of competencies in leadership, coaching, instructing and communicating. The scholarship may be withheld if a suitable candidate is not identified. Successful participants will receive the $3,000 award towards their post secondary education.
