Inspiring Every Kid and Every Community’s passion for hockey.

Yeoford Youth Thrive with Support from EKEC Grant

In the heart of Wetaskiwin County lies Yeoford, Alberta — a small, rural community where hockey dreams were once out of reach for many local kids due to financial and geographical barriers.

With the Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) Grant, those dreams have turned into reality. This past season, 54 kids from Yeoford came together weekly at the Winfield arena, lacing up their skates and hitting the ice for fun, connection, and community spirit.

“This has been an unbelievable asset to our community and players,” said Krista Wheale, Board Chair of the Yeoford Homeschoolers. “It has gotten more kids interested in hockey, learning some skills, and having fun.”

Access to ice time has long been a challenge in the area. With limited public skating and few local league options due to time and travel constraints, many families found themselves unable to participate in organized sport. The EKEC Grant eliminated that barrier, providing the financial and logistical support needed to bring hockey to life for local children.

“It’s been great to see all the kids out there having fun, playing together, and learning in a safe environment,” added Wheale. “This has become an integral part of our community and a way to bring families together.”

After receiving a grant last year, the community was determined to apply again — inspired by the impact it made.

“I can’t even recall the number of times kids would come up and tell me how happy they were to skate and play hockey,” Wheale shared. “The smiles on their faces were priceless and worth all the effort. It was all thanks to the grant. We want to continue to make an impact on these kids’ lives and encourage them to keep playing.”

For the children of Yeoford, the experience has been about more than just hockey. It’s about belonging.

“I love getting to skate with my friends every week!” said Chloe, a nine-year-old participant.

From joyful memories to newfound friendships, the EKEC-supported program has sparked something special in Yeoford — a reminder that with the right support, every kid truly can be part of the game.
