Every Kid Every Community Grant Helping Strengthen the Game in Olds

In Olds, the connection between junior hockey and grassroots development continues to grow and with support from Hockey Alberta’s Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) Grant, that impact is reaching even more young athletes.

The grant is helping support the Grizzlys School Program by offsetting the cost of ice time for the academy, allowing more students to access on-ice development opportunities while strengthening the relationship between local youth and the Olds Grizzlys.

Through this initiative, Grizzlys players are actively giving back by volunteering at Olds Minor Hockey Association practices, assisting with the academy for 12–13-year-olds, and visiting local schools to lead floor hockey sessions. Their involvement helps young players develop skills, builds confidence, and introduces the sport to students who may be experiencing hockey for the first time.

A key goal of the program is to teach Grizzlys players the importance of community leadership while creating meaningful touchpoints with the next generation of athletes. By engaging directly with youth both on and off the ice, players are helping foster a love for the game while making hockey feel more accessible.

“I think it gives them a different perspective when they get to learn something from a junior hockey player who was just like them a few years earlier,” said Kevin Watson, Manager of Business Operations for Olds Grizzlys. “The young minor hockey players in Olds really look up to the Grizzly players, especially when they get to interact with them on the ice at the academy and minor hockey practices”.

The grant also provides local children with the opportunity to attend Grizzlys home games, many for the very first time. This creates a powerful full-circle moment, as young participants get to watch the same players who have been mentoring them in practices and school programs compete in live game action.

Seeing familiar faces on the ice builds connection and inspiration. It allows young athletes to envision their own future in the game and strengthens their sense of belonging within the hockey community.

From mentorship and skill development to first time introductions through school programs, the initiative continues to expand hockey’s reach in Olds. Moments like these are where the game truly grows through access, leadership, and community connection.

Funding through Every Kid Every Community is available to assist amateur sports organizations, minor hockey organizations, youth groups, recreation groups, or any community group with an idea, project or program that helps establish an event or program to get local children active in hockey. Hockey is a great way for kids to be active, healthy and surrounded by positive leaders in their community. Keeping kids active in sport helps reduce childhood obesity, creates a safe and fun environment and forms friendship. Apply for an Every Kid Every Community Grant today!
